When I moved to my current neighborhood in Kansas, I decided to walk (and sometimes, huffing and puffing, to jog) around a 2-mile loop near our house. When I first walked over, and on countless subsequent visits, I was struck by the beautiful view that was just 2 minutes from my front door.
I had this idea to take a picture of the view each day for a year to see the subtle changes in the landscape, the weather, the sunlight. And then I continued to live my life without doing so.
Recently I was telling my husband about this idea and found myself thinking, "why not do it?" After all, I walk my dog by that spot each day. Why not take an extra moment to snap a photo? I reminded myself that the hardest thing to do is to begin.
So I picked up my camera.
I came to think of this as the Slow View. So often we speed through our days, oblivious to the beauty that surrounds us. This little project is forcing me to slow down and enjoy the view. I hope you enjoy it with me.
There are a few things I'd like to point out:
- I use a simple Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoot to take the photos.
- I do not use any special filters or presets when taking the photos.
- Nor do I make any changes in Photoshop, other than to resize the image to 640x480.
- I try to take the photo around the same time each day: 8am CST, give or take a few minutes here and there.
- If you see some days missing, I'll either get to them soon, I was trapped under something heavy, I plum forgot or I might be out of town.
That's it. I'm hoping to create a timelapse video at the end of a year. Until then... happy viewing.
